Why I Started Writing:
My start to writing was when I found myself involved in several events that were lacking in resources. I knew I had experience in these areas and by writing about them, I could help others. That led to my first two books. I love writing things that can help others.
Authors Who Have Influenced Me:
I am hard put to name authors who have influenced my writing. Around 1980 I bought a new book by Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness. It’s a difficult read, but it remains one of my favorite books. I have a servant’s heart and the book resonated with me. Another favorite author is Patrick Lencioni. He writes business books in parable, allegory, and fable format. Now days, I read nonfiction and fiction. I like to read books from new authors who have persevered to get into print. There is so many new writers to discover.
Books I Have Written:
I wrote and self-published Managing the Pastoral Search Process in 1997. In 1999, the Alban Institute picked it up and renamed it The Alban Guide to Managing the Pastoral Search Process. In 2010, we renamed it again and released it as a second edition titled, The Pastoral Search Journey: A Guide to Finding Your Next Pastor. After all these years it still sells.
In 1997, I self-published Fixing Your Feet: Injury Prevention and Treatment for Athletes and followed up with a 2nd edition in 2000. Then Wilderness Press, an outdoor press, picked it up and did a 3rd edition in 2004, and recently, a 7th edition in 2021. Each edition has been better and larger, and each surpasses sales of the previous editions. The book led to my doing foot care at running and adventure races in Chile, Costa Rica, the Amazon Jungle in Brazil twice, northern BC Canada, and all over the United States. I have followers around the world.
What I'm Working On Now:
In 1998, I started a book about becoming a better church board member. Through the years, the book has changed from a basic nonfiction book to a contemporary parable, the content has changed drastically many times, and new features have been added. Now it’s complete. I could explain the delays, but suffice it to say the Lord has kept this book on my heart. It’s the one I’ll be proudest of. The working title is The Pastor and the Board: 21 Leadership Principles to Build Responsible and Effective Church Leaders.
