Karin Beery
Why I Started Writing:
I started seriously writing after my husband was diagnosed with cancer. We’d only been married for nine months and were in our late 20s, so it was a complete shock. I binge read while he received chemotherapy treatments, then I decided to see if I could write a novel. I took my laptop to the hospital with me and would type while he slept. It started as a way to distract myself, but eventually, I wanted to see if I could actually write and publish a novel, so I kept writing! (And my husband has been cancer-free since 2010!)
Authors Who Have Influenced Me:
Tamara Leigh and Hope Lyda showed me that I could write a Christian novel without it being preachy, historical, or Amish. Mary Connealy and Janet Evanovich showed me that books can be laugh-out-loud funny while still telling gripping stories. Karen Witemeyer inspires me because her stories continue to include new settings, new issues, and new plotlines, even though she’s had several books published.
Books I Have Written:
My first book to be published is Summer Plans and Other Disasters. In addition to that, I’ve complete two contemporary romance novels and a contemporary novel. They don’t have titles yet; I just refer to them by the heroines’ names, so they’re Ashely, Caroline, and Addie. (Disclaimer: Addie was the first novel I ever wrote; she’ll need some serious therapy before she’s allowed out of the desk drawer.)
What I'm Working On Now:
Right now, I’m actively working on Christine’s story (a sequel to Caroline, but it will also work as a stand-alone novel) and already have plans for Carmen’s story (Caroline, Christine, and Carmen are sisters). Before I start with Carmen, though, I’m anxious to write Jack’s story. Jack is a minor character in Summer Plans, but I’ve always wanted to give him his own novel. There’s also a half-finished speculative fiction novel floating around, but that’s not high on my list of priorities right now.
