Robin Gilbert Luftig

Why I Started Writing:

When I was a young girl I wanted to be a reporter … just like Lois Lane. She was smart and glamorous, and it didn’t hurt that Superman was her friend. I toyed with writing through high school but put it on the back burner after graduation.

I picked up writing again in 2007—far past my Lois Lane days—when I rediscovered my joy in listening and telling stories. I soon wrote a book on healing after divorce. I finished from Pain to Peace in 2011, weeks before I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given days to live. Nothing focuses a life than looking at your own mortality. After going through physical, speech, and occupational therapies, I began writing again in earnest.

Authors Who Have Influenced Me:

In fiction, I am intrigued by the turn of a phrase. When I read my favorite authors, I know it will take me longer than usual because I savor every word. I want more than I story, I want to be changed. Some authors who have changed me through their fiction are Lori Roeleveld (Red Pen Redemption), Eva Marie Everson (Five Brides), Lynette Eason (Blue Justice Series), Richard Paul Evans (The Walk Series), and Terri Blackstock (Cape Refuse).

When it comes to nonfiction, I need to be moved by fresh logic as well as emotion. Some of my favorite writers are Sheila Walsh (God Loves Broken People: and those who pretend they’re not), Craig Groeschel (Hope in the Dark: Believing God is Good When Life is Not), Steven Furtick (Sun Stand Still: What Happens When You Dare Ask God for the Impossible [my all-time favorite]), Stephen King (On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft), and Gary Thomas (Sacred Marriage).
