Why I Started Writing:
I don’t think I took the regular route to become a writer. But then, in 1993, I gave birth to a son, our third child, who died nine days later. As expected, this event changed everything about our lives. In 1997, I decided to go on a mission trip to Haiti as a personal memorial to my son. That trip began a twenty-plus-year adventure in missions for my husband and me.
In 2012, I started to feel a nudge from the Holy Spirit to write a book about my mission adventures. I had never written much, so I laughed at the idea. The nudge continued, and I dismissed it by telling myself my ego was telling me to write. Finally, I asked God if this nudge was from Him and that He use my husband to confirm it. I had never mentioned any of this to Bill. About a month later, we were sitting in the living room when my husband asked me how my book was coming along. I shed tears as I explained the situation to him. Bill responded, “I guess you are writing a book.”
My first book was a memoir of the mission work; I never expected to write anything else. But, of course, God had other plans. I have always followed the Lord’s promptings, and as long as He keeps giving me words to write, I will continue to honor Him with those words.
Authors Who Have Influenced Me:
I am an avid reader and read across all genres. I enjoy the storytelling abilities of John Grisham, Alexander McCall Smith, and Jan Karon for fiction writers. Regarding nonfiction authors, I like the writing style of Lysa TerKeurst, Bill Hybels, and Mark Batterson. They all influence my writing style, and I pray for people to enjoy my works as much as I enjoy their writing.
